Earlier this year when MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe was replaced by former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta , we wondered if that meant MySpace co-founder Tom Anderson, aka default friend ‘Tom’ to all MySpace users, was also on his way out the door. After MySpace cut 30 percent of its staff yesterday, this became even more uncertain. But now, AllThingsD is reporting that Anderson is staying at the company, albeit without an official title for the moment. This sounds pretty much like what we expected to happen in the MySpace executive shuffle, at least in terms of how users of the social network will see it. While MySpace users might not care about job titles and

layoffs, they do notice changes on the site. And for better or worse, Tom will eternally be linked to the brand and user’s friend lists. Thus, it was important for MySpace to at least keep Tom in the fold, even if it’s just in a figurehead-type position. The answer to the “where did Tom go?!?” question is not yet another thing that MySpace wants to deal with at a time when they’re already seeing rapid user attrition to Facebook. On the other hand, don’t be surprised if Tom continues to lose virtual friends in more organic ways. Tags: myspace
