With so many athletes taking to Twitter and other social media tools, we’ve been closely monitoring how the professional sports leagues have been responding. The NFL recently reinforced its reputation as the “No Fun League” by banning all social media activity by players, their representatives, and team personnel both during and 90 minutes before and after games. With the NBA season set to tip off next month, ESPN reports that the league is set to reveal its own policy, which is described by their sources as “very minimal.” Not surprisingly, in-game tweeting is expected to be banned. Beyond that though, it seems as if most other social media activity will be allowed, though treated much like other forms of media communication. For example, players and coaches that take to social media to criticize officials can still expect to receive fines from the league. However, ESPN reports that individual teams will still

have discretion to add their own rules on top of those imposed by the NBA. We’ll wait for the official policy to come out to make a final ruling, but from what we know so far, it looks like the NBA is being reasonable here. So far, social media has been a great thing for the league: from Shaq being one of the first megastars to join Twitter to Allen Iverson announcing where he was signing with a tweet, fans are more connected than ever to their favorite athletes heading into this season. Hopefully, the NBA realizes a good thing and allows it to keep blossoming.
