Apple announced today that downloaded apps for the iPhone and iPod touch have exceded the two-billion mark, just over five months after reaching one billion. The App Store–launched just over a year ago–currently has 85,000 apps available to the 50 million iPhone and touch users worldwide. There are also 125,000 developers in Apple’s iPhone Developer Program, so expect apps to continue to emerge and sell at a fast pace. Steve Jobs sung the praises of the App Store’s success: “The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone. The App

Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it.” Given this pace, it shouldn’t take long for the App Store to reach 3, 4, 5 billion and beyond.
