Eying over the Silver PAC Evolution 5500 remote control, you get the immediate idea that it’s probably too expensive, too impractical. You probably don’t even have enough high-end devices to make such a high-maintenance remote feel comfortable in your living room. Yet you want one anyway. There’s no stopping it. The sleek profile, the brilliant 4.3-inch LCD touchscreen, the slick-looking interface–this is a remote that’d rank among your most prized possessions. And it’d hold that rank for about 10 minutes, up until you realized that it’s just a stupid remote control–a brief segue to more interesting devices. Plus, you could get much the same experience from a smartphone or HTPC. Necessary home theater accessory or not, the Silver PAC Evolution 5500 is

based around Sideshow, the Windows feature that allows users to view Vista gadgets on an external device. It also gets all kinds of other goodies that you’re not used to seeing on a remote including an ARM9 processor, Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2, built-in speaker and microphone, capacitive buttons, Wi Fi and Microsoft Media Center support. Though the price isn’t yet available to prove it, we have a feeling that the associated expense will tarnish the crave factor of this one. Release is set for February.
